About the Author
Dr. Oriaku A. Kas-Osoka is a pediatrician, educator, mother, mentor, and lifelong lover of words who believes every child deserves to see themselves, and all of their big, beautiful feelings, reflected in the stories they read.
As a physician who has spent her career caring for children and adolescents, she has seen how powerful it can be when young people find the words to express what is happening inside them.
As a Black woman, mother, and storyteller, she is especially passionate about creating books in which children of color can simply be: curious, creative, complicated, joyful, unsure, imaginative, and fully themselves.
When she isn't caring for patients, teaching future doctors, or writing, she can usually be found enjoying life with her family.
Why I Wrote Ada and the Pen that Listened
I wrote Ada and the Pen that Listened during a time when I needed a space to express my own feelings—to tell my story, recognize my worth, and remember that what I had to say mattered. Writing gave me room to listen to myself and put words to feelings I had been carrying.
As Ada's story took shape, I began thinking about how many people, especially children, need that same space. A space where their feelings are welcomed, their voices are valued, and they can share their stories without fear of being dismissed. That realization became the heart of this book.
My hope is that every reader, young or old, finds a little of themselves in Ada and feels seen, heard, and valued. I hope her story reminds you that your feelings deserve space and your words matter. When you express yourself, you give your truth a voice—and your story deserves to be heard.
